What I learnt whilst working at Yellow Spider Media

Since I started the Kickstart Scheme in June, I have learnt a wide range of new skills and gathered a more professional experience in social media and digital marketing.

Using social media as a personal account is totally different to using the platforms for clients or the company itself. There is a lot to think about other than what you post and how your friends are going to react to what you’ve shared. The elements that come into play when posting content for other companies are unimaginable. (until you learn what they are)

Going over my experience at Yellow Spider Media I have come up with a few things I think is most important when working in social media or the most surprising to know within the digital marketing industry.

I learnt what it meant to run social media accounts and post content for clients or for Yellow Spider Media which takes us on to the second one on my list.

SCHEDULING! I didn’t know this was a thing, but it is in social media. There are apps that allow you to schedule content for different social media platforms at once, Hootsuite is the main platform used for scheduling, but Facebook Business-suite is another platform which allows you schedule for Facebook and Twitter.

Scheduling is just a small cog in the machine as you have to understand how social media platforms function beneath the engagement of sharing, liking or commenting. Beneath social media platform are algorithms which is a list of rules or instructions to follow in order to solve a problem or get the result you are asking for. Algorithms can help you to decide when you post your content to how you post it… this means that if you post at a certain time during the day then only the audience that takes an interest into what you are promoting will see it in that period of time.

As social media is changing all the time then you have to change with it. I learnt that keeping update with trends, algorithms or any news about social media platforms made the work I did easier for me as I was keeping myself in the loop.

At Yellow Spider Media I learnt new terms such as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), which is the process of improving your site to increase its visibility when people search for products or service on search engines such as Google by adding keywords or sentences related to your business. Whilst I was learning new skills, I also learnt how to write blogs which I learnt how to include SEO into writing such subjects.

The most interest part within this whole experience for me to learn was target audience. I previously knew the term, but I didn’t know how deep the term went as there are sections that conclude a target audience: Demographics and Psychographics. Each of these graphics are different but lead us to a specific type of person which are more likely to buy your product or services.

As much I would love to cram everything I learnt whilst working at Yellow Spider Media, I’d be here all day! But I will include a list of the other important things I learnt in digital marketing and social media.
